For those in the hobby community, the idea of a Gundam Base Malaysia, located in Farenheit88 of all places, is a miracle in and of itself- it's a treasure trove of exclusive kits, including special Glossy finishes and clear versions of popular mobile suits like the Barbatos Gundam or the Zaku II.
But even at the opening ceremony itself, Lit Takk Executive Director Tan Ee Chian stressed that it wasn't enough to just be a retail outlet.
Instead, Tan highlighted that it was about creating a space for the community, which is why the Gundam Base Malaysia even includes a hobby space for people to start assembling their kits.
"This hobby cannot continue without young collectors", he said.
"It's [also] an opportunity to spend time away from mobile phones", he noted.
It's this kind of thinking that pulled me into the hobby in the first place. When you're building a kit, it's an intimate setting. Just like you'd be on a date, you can't be building if you're also scrolling through reels- and if more people thought like that we might find salvation in a Gundam Base.
The store will be open from 10am to 10pm daily, with interactive model building workshops from 12-3pm and 5pm-8pm starting April 20th- meaning plenty of people might have their gunpla awakening.
Gundam Base Malaysia Overview

With that in mind, the layout of the Gundam Base Malaysia makes way more sense. The first half of it is almost entirely Gundam Base-exclusive kits. While the store has highlighted several featured items like the Clear MG 1/100 Barbatos Gundam as well as the Gundam Base-colored MG 1/100 RX78-2, its selection is much larger than it lets on.
From various degree of Unicorn Gundam retools to a Gundam Thunderbolt two-pack with both the Full Armor Gundam and Psycho Zaku, chances are if you've seen it in a catalogue you can find it here.
I'm particularly surprised by just how many kits have a Gundam Base Limited version. The Real Type Gunpla series, which feature more closely proportioned anime proportions sand details are also available here, as are mainstay kits like the MG Sazabi Ver Ka with various different finishes. Given how big Bandai's product catalogue has gotten over the years, it's not uncommon for these types of releases to slip under the radar. Thankfully, you can find a good chunk of them here.

This even includes the Char's Counterattack exclusive kits, like the Axis Shock-colored Geara Doga and Alpha Azieru, as well as the more location-based kits like the Diver City Mega Sized Unicorn Gundam (with LEDs) as well as the RG RX-93ff Nu Gundam that was previously associated with the Fukuoka Gundam Base. Given that the Geara Doga is far from the face of Gunpla, it's good to know that even those of us who like the more sidelined weirdos are also worthy of the Gundam Base Limited Sticker.
Even if you're not looking for "exclusive" kits, though, the store still has you covered. Its back half contains regular retail kits, with all manner of HGs from the timeless HGUC kits from 0079, as well as newer kits like the HG 1/144 GQuuuuuux. If you're new to the hobby but not interested in something simple like an SD or Entry Grade, I couldn't recommend starting with the HGUC kits enough. From heroic-looking Federation mobile suits to the weirder Zeon suits like the Hy-Gogg, you're sure to find something that strikes your fancy without colony dropping your wallet.
If you've come from one of the more recent anime, those have their own shelves too. The Witch From Mercury has its own shelf space, letting you sift through HG Aerial Gundams as well as Lfrith Gundam or even the Armored Core-lite Zoworts as well as the GQuuuuuux section with both variants of the titular Gundam as well as its G-Fred rival.

Even the most lavish spender has things to look for here. For one, Gundam Base Malaysia has in-store units of the massive PG Unleashed RX93 Nu Gundam. It'll cost you, and you'll definitely need to head straight to your car after, but the option is definitely there. If you want something smaller MGEX 1/100 Strike Gundam Twilight Coating is sure to bring a touch of class to any living room or shelf- just be ready for its equally classy price point.
Be it anime fan or hobbyist, the Gundam Base Malaysia feels like the perfect place to spend an afternoon, especially if you're with someone open to getting into the hobby. Be it "Just a small kit" or "I need that base part to complete my diorama". it's a great place to just be immersed by the hobby itself, all at a fairly reasonable price. You can find the Gundam Base Malaysia at Farenheit88, Level 2, just be sure to make sure you have the boot space for any lavish hauls. The venue is even prepared to stock kits from the upcoming Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway sequel, so definitely make a stop by here once you've got someone hooked on Gundam.
